The tubular casing of a butterfly valve consists of rubber, plastic, or similar resilient material, and its internal circumference is less than that of the valve disc so that the casing will be distorted to give a tight closure on turning the valve to the closed position. The casing may comprise an inner layer of soft rubber vulcanized to an outer layer of reinforced rubber. The reinforcement may consist of springs or metal bands. The valve may be circular or elliptical in shape. The disc can be rubberized or made of ceramic or plastic material.
