Abstract
In a process for sweetening sour petroleum fractions by contacting with cupric chloride as catalyst to oxidise mercaptans to disulphides, the activity of the catalyst is maintaned by contacting spent solid catalyst with an alkali metal chloride such as sodium chloride, or with ammonium chloride. These chlorides may be introduced into the sweetening unit at any point. Cracked petroleum fractions may be treated; cracked gasoline, for example, may first be washed with aqueous caustic soda (5-15 B<\>ae) to remove H2S, phenals and lower molecular weight mercaptains, water-washed, heated and then sweetened with a slurry of cupric chloride, clay and recycled gasolene; sodium or ammonium chloride may then be added and the sweetened naphtha passed to a settling zone. Oxygen for the conversion of cuprous chloride formed in the process to cupric chloride may be introduced into the naphtha before it is sweetened.
