A switch 80 under the control of the fingers 46 associated with the middle detector station M is connected in series with the switches associated with the upper and lower detector and in the absence of a workpiece is in a normally open position. Thus unless a portion of the workpiece has served to close the switch 80 no signal can be given by the upper or lower detectors U and L by the intermediate edges of the workpiece.
