770,364. Making cans. AKT.-GES. FUR UNTERNEHMUNGEN DER EISEN-UND STAHLINDUSTRIE. Feb. 22, 1955 [Feb. 24, 1954], No. 5292/55. Class 83 (2). Apparatus for making can bodies from sheet metal blanks in which the blanks are folded to form a longitudinally seamed can, the blanks being sequentially conveyed to various working stations, is characterized in that at each working station a plurality of blanks, arranged one after the other in the feeding direction, is worked simultaneously. Two blanks 2 are withdrawn from two compartments, arranged in a magazine 1 in line with the direction of feed of the blanks, by suction means 3 and presented thereby to spring-loaded pawls 5 on a feed rail 4 reciprocated by a crank 27. The blanks are fed intermittently by the rail 4, two at a time, successively to an intermediate station 6, then to a corner cutting station 7 where the blanks are positioned by abutments 8 moved down to engage their front edges while the corners are cut by tools 9, 9<SP>1</SP>, a stop rail under which the blanks are guided preventing return of the blank with the feed pawls 5. The blanks next pass to an intermediate station, then to a station 10 where the edges are chamfered, then to a station 13 where adhesive gum is applied to the side edges, then to a bending station 14 where the blanks are folded around a mandrel 18 by folders 19, Fig. 5. The folded blanks, 20, are removed from the mandrel 18, by pawls 21 on rails 22 reciprocated in the mandrel, and presented to spring-loaded retractable claws 23, Fig. 11, on a continuously moving conveyer chain 25 which pushes the blanks to a soldering device. To work only one blank at a time the machine is modified by removing the central partition 35 of the magazine 1 and suitably adjusting one of the outside walls, by removing one of the abutments 8 and tools 9, 9<SP>1</SP> and adjusting the others and by suitable adjustment at the other working stations. Blanks of differing length may be worked simultaneously.
