Abstract
The invention comprises 1 : 1 : 3-trimethylindan - 3 - hydroperoxide which is prepared by reacting molecular oxygen with 1 : 1 : 3-trimethylindane in the liquid phase at a temperature between about 50 DEG and 130 DEG C. and recovering the hydroperoxide produced from the reaction mixture. The 1 : 1 : 3-trimethylindane may be anhydrous or emulsified with water. Small amounts of alkaline stabilizing agents such as alkali metal hydroxides, carbonates, bicarbonates and acetates and calcium oxide hydroxide or carbonate are preferably present. The hydroperoxide may be extracted from the oxidation mixture with a concentrated aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide which is subsequently diluted with water or acidified, for example with carbon dioxide, to give the free hydroperoxide. Alternatively petroleum ether may be added to the oxidation mixture to precipitate the hydroperoxide. In examples: (1) oxygen is passed into 1 : 1 : 3-trimethylindane at 90 DEG C. in the presence of an aqueous sodium carbonate solution or calcium hydroxide; (2) air is passed into 1 : 1 : 3-trimethylindane at 120 DEG C. in the presence of aqueous sodium hydroxide solution.
