769,687. Glass-fibre paper etc.; impregnating for electrical and chemical resistance. AMERICAN MACHINE & FOUNDRY CO. April 17, 1953 [June 12, 1952], No. 10554/53. Classes 96 and 140. Uniform sheets of glass or mineral wool fibres, 0.1 to 2.5. mils thick are made from dilute dispersions in glycerine, carboxymethyl- or hydroxyethyl cellulose, sodium alginate, polyethylene or polypropylene glycol, resins, or gums, &c., these dispersants being mixed with water in a tank 6 filtered at 10, mixed with glass fibres &c. in a tank 12 strained at 18, de-aerated in a settling tank 20 pumped to a vat 26 of a cylinder forming machine, compartments 36 of which are subjected to suction from conduits 40, 48 discharging into tanks 42, 50, a conduit 56 &c. supplying air to blow the web W off the cylinder. The web may be washed by a water spray 38 and impregnated at 52 with a binder, e.g. hydroxyethyl- or sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, urea-formaldehyde resin, alumina sol, or colloidal silica &c., and dried at 54. The web may also be passed through a bath of a binder solution and its fibres may form a reinforcement of a plastic sheet. Other binders mentioned are silicone resin, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, and polytetrafluoroethylene.
