Valve clearance in, e.g. an internal combustion engine, is measured electrically. As shown, Fig. 2, the valve stem 5 carries an extension rod 10 extending axially through the tappet adjusting screw 8 into a pair of coils 11 housed in the tappet 2. In the lowest position of the tappet a non-ferrous section 12 of the rod 10 is located centrally within the coils so that a bridge in which the coils are connected is balanced. As the control cam 1 raises the tappet, the coils 11 are moved relative to the rod until the tappet screw 8 engages the valve stem. The bridge output at this point is a measure of the valve clearance, and after amplification and rectification may actuate an oscillograph or recorder. With an overhead valve, Fig. 3, the coils 11 are carried by the rocker 13, and a spring 14 carried by the rocker forces the rod 10 into engagement with a disc 15 secured to the valve stem 5. A single coil may be used but two coils are preferred, for temperature compensation, and have a positive or negative temperature coefficient. Variable condensers may be used in lieu of the coils.
