A flexible floor covering consists of pieces 3, 4, not substantially less than # inch thick, of wood veneer that has been completely dried under firm constraint between grooved ventilating cauls or wire screens, each piece being reinforced across the grain along at least one edge by contact with another piece with the grain at right angles, the veneer sheets being bonded to a layer of felt or thick paper saturated with asphalt, coumarone resin, or synthetic rubber, e.g. by means of a synthetic rubber adhesive. The pieces of veneer may be squares, or may form a basket weave pattern as shown.
