Abstract

A solution containing nickel and cobalt sulphates and/or chlorides and containing the metals in a weight ratio Ni:Co higher than 1 is treated to separate the metals by precipitating together the nickel and cobalt as hydroxides, removing the precipitate and adding it to a further quantity of the primary solution, subjecting the solution containing suspended hydroxides to a reduction with a reducing gas at a temperature above 100 DEG C. and at super-atmospheric pressure, thus precipitating nickel as metal from solution and concentrating cobalt in the solution, the amount of hydroxides added being such that the pH during reduction does not fall below 2. The hydroxides may be progressively added and dissolved in the solution during reduction so that the pH is maintained between 2 and 3. The solution remaining after reduction may be treated to remove any residual nickel by the methods disclosed in Specifications 650,595, 655,149 and 683,679. Specification 269,164 [Class 1(iii)], also is referred to.ALSO:A solution containing nickel and cobalt sulphates and/or chlorides and containing the metals in a weight ratio Ni : Co higher than 1 is treated to separate the metals by precipitating together the nickel and cobalt as hydroxides, removing the precipitate and adding it to a further quantity of the primary solution, subjecting the solution containing suspended hydroxides to a reduction with a reducing gas such as hydrogen at a temperature above 100 DEG C. and at superatmospheric pressure e.g. 15-45 atmospheres, and removing the precipitated nickel, the amount of hydroxides introduced into the primary solution being such that the pH of the solution during the reduction does not fall below 2. The product nickel should contain less than 1 part of cobalt to 100 parts of nickel. The hydroxides may be progressively introduced and dissolved in the solution during reduction so that the pH is maintained between 2 and 3. The solution remaining after reduction may be treated to remove any residual nickel by the methods disclosed in Specifications 650,595, 655,149 and 683,679, [all in Group III]. Specification 269,164 [Class 82(1)], also is referred to.
