Abstract
In the process for extracting nickel from laterite-type ore by reduction to form nickel and then treating with carbon monoxide, the process is effected in two stages, (1) treating the finely-divided ore with a mildly-reducing gas at 400 DEG to 600 DEG C., followed by treatment with carbon monoxide at about 50 DEG C.; (2) treating the residue with a similar reducing gas at 700 DEG to 870 DEG C., and finally with carbon monoxide. A mildly reducing gas contains reducing components (hydrogen or carbon monoxide) in the proportions of 3 : 1 to 1 : 3 relative to nonreducing components (carbon dioxide, steam, or nitrogen). In an example, a Venezuelan ore containing 1.8 per cent Ni and 20 per cent Fe is ground to pass 100 mesh, and treated with a mixture of 25 per cent CO2, 25 per cent H2, and 50 per cent N2 for 4 hours at 550 DEG C., and after treatment with carbon monoxide for 18 hours at 50 DEG C., the residue is treated with the same mixture of gases at 760 DEG C. for 2 hours. The final treatment with carbon monoxide is continued for 6 hours. 87 Per cent of the nickel is recovered.
