Abstract
Cobalt and nickel, present in solution as sulphates or chlorides (or ammoniacal complexes thereof) in a weight ratio of Ni-Co greater than 2/1 , are separated by treating with a reducing gas under super-atmospheric pressure and a temperature above 100 DEG C., and stopping the reduction while the metallic nickel which precipitates contains less than 2, preferably less than 0.5, parts by weight of Co per 100 parts by weight of Ni; separating and treating the solution with iron and/or cobalt, an alloy of iron and cobalt or an alloy of iron and/or cobalt and another metal or metals in the presence of S, Se, Te, As or Sb (as described and claimed in Specifications 650,595, 655,149 and 683,679) to produce a practically Ni-free cobalt solution and a residue which is then brought into solution in the form of sulphates or chlorides and added to the original solution. In the example an ammoniacal sulphate complex was treated with hydrogen in an autoclave at 120 DEG C. and 70 atmospheres; the pH was adjusted to 3 and maintained below 5 with sulphuric acid whilst treating with Co and S in powder form; the final residue was subjected to a sulphatizing roast at 550 DEG C., dissolved and converted into ammoniacal complexes before recycling.ALSO:Nickel is precipitated from solutions of sulphates or chlorides of nickel and cobalt (or ammoniacal complexes thereof), wherein the weight ratio of Ni/Co is higher than 2/1, by treating with a reducing gas under pressure and an elevated temperature, reduction being stopped while the metallic nickel which precipitates contains less than 2, preferably less than 0.5 parts by weight of Co per 100 parts by weight of Ni. The remaining solution is treated to obtain a cobalt compound in pure form (see Group III) and recycled. In the example an ammoniacal sulphate complex was treated with hydrogen in an autoclave at 120 DEG C. and 70 atmospheres. Specifications 650,595, 655,149 and 683,679, [all in Group III] are referred to.
