Abstract
1300445 Extraction of nickel ETHYL CORP 9 March 1970 [17 March 1969] 11119/70 Heading C1D [Also in Division C1] A process for the recovery of nickel from mixtures, particularly nickel ores, which contain cobalt and/or copper includes the steps of forming an ammoniacal solution of a nickel salt from the mixture and treating this with carbon monoxide, e.g. synthesis gas, in the presence of cyanide ion to form Ni(CO) 4 . The carbonyl may then be decomposed to nickel metal or converted to halides or organic compounds of nickel. The preferred source of nickel is a sulphide ore concentrate; this is suspended in aqueous ammonia and aerated to give the nickel solution, also containing any Co or Cu which may be present, and to precipitate any iron as ferric oxide hydrate. During the carbonylation, which is preferably carried out at 200 to 2500 psig and 100-200‹ C, Cu is reduced to the metal and Co to [Co(CO) 4 ], which may be recovered separately. The carbonylation is preferably carried out in the presence of a water-immiscible solvent to extract the Ni(CO) 4 .
