Abstract
768,910. Fuel briquettes. STAMICARBON N.V. April 18, 1955 [April 22, 1954], No. 11175/55. Class 50. In a process for forming briquettes from a mixture of a material which softens on being heated to a certain temperature, e.g. bituminous coal, and particles of a material which does not soften at that temperature, e.g. coke breeze, by pressing the mixed particles together while the softening particles are in a softened condition, the softening and inert particles are fed into and intimately mixed in a carrier gas stream and then separated from the gas and pressed together for forming the briquette, the carrier gas and/or at least some of the inert particles having been preheated to such an extent that the temperature of the softening particles is rapidly raised by heat exchange. In Fig. 1 a hot carrier gas is formed in a combustion chamber 4 by burning gas with air and the hot gases, e.g. at 900‹ C., pass along an insulated pipe 1 into which coke breeze and bituminous fuel coal (temperature of maximum softening about 420‹ C.) are fed from bunkers 5 and 6 respectively so that a mixture is obtained in the cyclone separator 2 containing 70-80 per cent by weight of coke breeze and 20-30 per cent by weight of bituminous fine coal. The mixture passes out of cyclone 2 through a briquetting press 3. In the modification shown in Fig. 2 an inert carrier gas is passed along the pipe 1 and heated coke breeze is fed into the carrier from a bunker 8 in which the breeze is partially combusted as a fluidized bed. In further modifications a mixture of coke breeze and bituminous fine coal is fed into a hot carrier gas and a quantity of heated coke breeze is added adjacent the point of entry to the cyclone separator. In another arrangement heated coke breeze is fed into a carrier gas in two stages, one preceding and one following the feeding in of the bituminous fine coal. The flow rate of the carrier gas is preferably about 20 m./sec.
