768,796. Filters; treating sewage. MERGES, H. A., [trading as CONDUXWERK H. A. MERGES KOMM.-GES.]. April 21, 1955 [April 27, 1954], No. 11523/55. Classes 46 and 111. [Also in Group II] Mechanism for disintegrating and screening coarse material carried in a liquid, e.g. sewage, comprises a revoluble screening drum 5, Fig. 1, which is formed with a plurality of circumferentially-extending slots 21 and with cutting elements 24 in its peripheral surface, and a plurality of combs 12 arranged adjacent the surface of the drum and having teeth entering the slots 21. In the form shown, the drum is built up of a plurality of segmental-shaped screens, Fig. 5, which are detachably secured to longitudinal supporting arms 20, Fig. 4, each screen comprising a plurality of circumferentially-extending ribs 17 defining the slots 21 therebetween, and the outer surface of the ribs being provided with notches or recesses 23 to form the cutting elements 24. The ribs of each screen are held together by longitudinal members 25. The latter may be arranged in rows which extend parallel to or at a small inclination to the axis of the drum, and may be formed only in certain drum areas which are arranged in staggered relationship. Each cutting element may taper circumferentially of the drum surface and be wider at its leading edge. The combs 12 are mounted on supporting columns 8 spaced around the periphery of the drum and each comprise a set of spring plates 16, Fig. 4, which are preferably staggered to form an inclined cutting edge. The combs on adjacent columns are preferably staggered axially so as to engage different parts of the drum.
