Class 39(3) A hot-plate or surface heater comprises. a tubular metal-sheathed electric resistance heater 14 bent to form a horizontal heating surface and having on its underside U-shaped members 46 arranged to. interlock with horizontal tongues 42 formed on radial legs 28 of a supporting spider 27 so as to permit limited sliding movement but prevent detachment of the spider from the heater. The spider has three legs at an angle of 120 degrees, two of the legs 28b, 28c being integral with one another; and after engagement of the tongues 42 of these legs with the U-shaped portions 46 welded on to the underside of the spiral heater, the third leg 28a is similarly engaged with the U-shaped portions 46, and a flange 40 on the inner end of the leg 28a is fixed as by welding to the leg 28c. The ends 24 of the heater are bent downwardly and outwardly so as to extend under the hob 12 of a range and extend through a plate 25 forming a drip shield. A bent rod 48 is welded at one end 52 to the leg 28a and is welded intermediate its length to the plate 25, the outer end of the rod being bent back at 50 to enter an aperture 54 in a bezel ring 30 resting on the range hob 12. A reflector 37 has a flange 38 resting on an inner flange 36 of the bezel 30, and the spider 27 rests on the flange 38. A small finger 56 formed at the end of a spider leg 28a enters a recess in the vertical flange 32 of the bezel. An inverted cup-shaped plate 60 is attached centrally to the spider.
