Abstract
The invention comprises aluminium and magnesium alcoholates of alcohols having from 13 to 22 carbon atoms. They may be obtained by a process comprising heating an aluminium or magnesium alcoholate of an alcohol having up to 10 carbon atoms with a monohydric alcohol having from 13 to 22 carbon atoms, thus causing liberation of the lower alcohol which may then be removed by distillation. The alcohols having from 13 to 22 carbon atoms include tridecanol, oleyl and stearyl alcohols. In the examples: (a) aluminium isopropylate and tridecyl alcohol are heated together to give aluminium tridecylate; and (b) aluminium isopropylate is dissolved in mineral spirits and heated with oleyl alcohol to give aluminium oleylate. Specifications 667,708 and 731,216 are referred to.ALSO:Aluminium alcoholates having from 13 to 22 carbon atoms may be used as or in waxes for leather and as pore fillers for leather and wood and as water-repellant coatings. Magnesium alcoholates having from 13 to 22 carbon atoms may be added to hydrocarbons such as mineral spirits and gasoline to form a safely transportable gel; the gels may be broken by adding 1-2 per cent of water to precipitate magnesium hydroxide leaving the hydrocarbon in pure gum-free form mixed with a little alcohol.
