A cone 5 comprising annular ribs 6, Fig. 1, connected by webs 7, Fig. 2, is rotated by a hollow shaft 1 through a pivot 2 and a supporting cone 4 to which the cone 5 is secured by webs 20. Interposed between the cones 4 and 5 is a further cone 8 secured at its top to a shaft 9 which is driven by the same means as drives the shaft 1 but through a slip clutch so that the cones 5 and 8 rotate in the same direction but at different speeds. The cone 8 is provided with arms 11, Fig. 2, which carry rings 12 each having an upper horizontal surface 12a at a small distance from a corresponding lower horizontal surface 6a on one of the ribs 6, a series of narrow annular slots 13 constituting the separating slots of the apparatus being thereby provided. Liquid films forming across the slots 13 by surface tension effects and preventing passage of liquid therethrough are disrupted by relative rotation of the ribs 6 and rings 12; similarly, any solid particles entering the slots 13 are pulverized and centrifuged out. Material to be separated is fed from a stationary hopper 15 by blades 16 at the top of the cone 8 into the space between the latter and cone 5. Solids tend to collect in recesses 14 (adjacent the slots 13) in the rings 6 and finally drop into the frame 21. Liquid is discharged at 19. Relative axial adjustment of the cones may be provided.
