Abstract

767,334 Vices. SIMPSON, J. R. June 30. 1955 [Aug. 5, 1954], No. 22730/54. Class 61 In a conformable jaw vice two sets of jaw leaves 10 are adapted to be clamped in the position dictated by the profile conformation of an object x to be held by means which cause frictional resistance against diplacement of the jaw leaves in excess of the pressure exerted by the vice's actuating crew 16, said means comprising in combination co-operating inclined surfaces 11b, 19a which are operable either independently or automatically in conjunction with the vice screw. Each set of leaves 10 is slidably packed in a rectangular housing 11. Springs 12 engage grooves 13 in the leaves and press each leaf individually towards 'the object x. The springs 12 are supported upon rods 14 and are tensioned against the underside of cover pieces 11a of housings 11. One housing may be fixed to a base plate 15 or both housings may be slidable under the action of a right and left hand screw threaded shaft 16 to which a tommy bar 16a is connected. When the object x is placed between the faces of leaves 10 and the vice closed, the leaves which are pressed furthest back by the part of greatest width of the object's profile contact the lip 17a of a pivotally disposed actuator member 17 which is under the influence of a spring 18. A wedge mem. ber 19 is linked to the actuator 17 by a stud 17b and rollers 20 are interposed between the parallel faces 19a, 11b of the wedge and housing respectively. As the vice is closed by the screw 16 the inclined faces 19a, 11b move in relation to one another and the friction between the leaves 10 increases. In a modification shown in Fig. 2 the friction between the leaves is produced by a primary member constituted by a cam 22 operable by a lever 22a. The lever 22a is mounted in the housing 11 and engages the wedge member 19. The leaves 10 may be formed with grooves 10a of wedge section engaged by ridges 10b of corresponding section (Fig. 3).
