Abstract
767,051. Making reinforced plastic pipes. FIBERCAST CORPORATION. Aug. 9,1954. No. 23121/54. Class 87(2). [Also in Group XXVIII] A plastic pipe with fibrous reinforcement embedded in it throughout its length near the surface and threaded externally or internally on at least one end is made by inserting a fibrous mat into a tubular mould adjacent the inner surface of the mould, injecting a liquid thermosetting resin, centrifuging the liquid resin to form a tubular body, simultaneously moulding threads on one or both ends of the body and curing the resin. A fibrous mat 20 is rolled into a tube and inserted in the bore of a cylindrical mould 6, Fig. 3 in one or each end of which a member 12 has been fitted with a friction fit. The mat is long enough to extend to the ends of the mould. This member is formed with internal threads which are preferably tapered. The mat 20 and the member 12 are retained bv a cap 22 placed over the end of the mould. The mould is rotated and heated while liquid resin is injected into it, which penetrates the fibrous mat 20 by centrifugal force, including that part within the member 12, into the thread grooves of which some of the fibres will also be forced. When the pipe 18 so formed has been cured and solidified the end caps 22 are removed and the pipe forced out of either end of the mould. The mould may be counterbored to receive an internally threaded member of larger diameter to form a pipe with " upset " threads at its ends, in which case the moulded pipe can only be forced out of the mould in one .direction and the invention can be used for moulding threads on one end only. Fig. 5 shows a construction for moulding internal threads of larger diameter on one end of the moulded pipe, suitable e.g. for receiving the external threads on a pipe moulded as in Fig. 3. A counterbore 60 is formed in the mould 50, with a shoulder 64, which may be rounded as shown, between the counterbore and the bore 58 of the mould. The fibrous mat 72 is inserted in the mould and folded into contact with the wall of the counterbore and an externally threaded member 66 is threaded into the mat. The retaining cap 70 may have holes 80 for locating pins 78 which fit into holes in the member 66 and ensure its concentricity.
