Abstract

A thickened oil comprises a hydrocarbon lubricating oil and 0.5 to 30 per cent of a solid polyethylene of molecular weight from 10,000 to 40,000. The hydrocarbon oil may be a petroleum oil, such as naphthenic, paraffinic and mixed base mineral oils, or an oil derived from coal, or a synthetic oil such as alkyl benzene or alkylene polymers, e.g. polymers of ethylene, propylene, butylene and mixtures. The products are advantageous for lubricating sealed bearings of electric motors and compressors, and rocker arms of aeroplane motors. They also find application as greases in port installations, steel rolling mills, water pumps, oil well drilling equipment and mining machinery, and are useful in air filters and cleaners, e.g. in air filters for Diesel engines and in air-conditioning systems. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 710,109.ALSO:A thickened oil comprises a hydrocarbon lubricating oil and 0.5 to 30 per cent of a solid polyethylene of molecular weight from 10,000 to 40,000. Optional additives such as oxidation and rust inhibitors, extreme pressure, anti-foaming, anti-wear and dispersing agents, other thickening agents and viscosity index improvers, may be added. The products are more resistant to oxidation than metallic soap thickened greases and consequently are advantageous for lubricating sealed bearings of electric motors and compressors, and rocker arms of airplane motors. Further, owing to their resistance to emulsification, they find application as greases in port installations, steel rolling mills, water pumps, oil well drilling equipment and mining machinery. The products are also useful for air filters and cleaners, e.g. in air filters for diesel engines and in air conditioning systems. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 710,109.
