Abstract
766,788. Drilling; programming for machinetools. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Feb. 4, 1954 [Nov. 6, 1952], No. 27976/52. Class 83 (3). A machine-tool has a tool and a work-table 3, Fig. 2, means for moving either the work-table or the tool in at least two directions x, y to a position prescribed by data in digital form, which is supplied, independently of the moving means, to the positioning-means, and means for sensing a difference between the position prescribed by the data and the position of the movable-member to cause the latter to be moved to a position in which the difference is zero. As applied to a boring-machine, the compound work-slide is adjusted by two leadscrews driven by electric-motors. Each leadscrew is driven by a motor 5 controlled through an amplidyne 12 and an amplifier 11 by the error-voltage between a selsyn 10, pre-set to correspond to the position to which the table 3 is to be moved, and a selsyn 7 operated by rack- and-pinion 8, 9, either the rack or the selsyn being fixed to the table. Coarse and fineadjustment selsyns geared to each other may be used as described in Specification 581,743, [Group XXXVIII], the controlling selsyns 10C and 10F being adjusted by the arrangement shown in Fig. 3 from digital information on a punched-tape 14. In this arrangement, the shaft 15 of the coarse selsyn 10C is rotated by a pawl-and-ratchet 22, 23 actuated by a solenoid 21 each time a switch 17 is closed by a hole in the left-hand column of the tape 14. Three further columns of holes close further switches 18-20, which adjust the shaft 16 of the fine selsyn 10F through ratchets 26, 31, 36, gears 33, 38, and differential-gears 32, 37. The information on the tape is in the decimal code, and the shaft 16 is therefore connected to the shaft 15 and the ratchet 31 by gear-ratios of 10: 1 and to the ratchet 36 by a gear-ration of 100: 1. The tape may also contain information to control the depth-of-feed of the tool and to control a turret holding the tools, or to deliver or indicate the correct tool to the operator. The ratchet-wheels 23, 26, 31, 36 are returned to zero-position before each positioning operation.
