Abstract

869,183. Drilling-machine details. WITZIG, E. K., and FRANK, R. July 28, 1958 [July 31, 1957], No. 24282/58. Class 83 (3). A drilling &c. machine comprises a bed 3 with a column 2 supporting vertically adjustable, interchangeable tool heads which include their own driving and feeding means 10, 11, and an interchangeable, indexable work-table 1 on the bed and including work-holders and a table-locking device. The heads may each have one, two, four, five, six, eight &c., spindles for drilling, tapping, countersinking, facing &c., operations on work held by work-holders operated mechanically or hydraulically. In Fig. 1, two tool-heads 8, 9 are used, tool-head 8 having eight laterally adjustable drill spindles, and tool-head 9 eight laterally adjustable tap spindles. The tool-heads are adjusted vertically by mechanisms 24. The work-table is indexed in steps of 120 degrees, and may be locked by compression, and thus radial expansion, of a flexible member 13, Fig. 9, advanced through a bush 17 in the fixed part 44 of the table, into a bush 18 in the rotatable part 6 by a piston 46. The member 13 is sandwiched between a flange 16 on the piston rod and a further piston 15 in a cylinder B. Fluid is admitted beneath piston 15, through port 48, to raise member 13, and when a passage 49 is uncovered, enters cylinder B, thus expanding member 13 in the bores of bushes 17, 18. In the combination of Fig. 6a, two five-spindle tool heads are used, but only three spindles of each head are operative at the two work-stations 26, 27, work being loaded at the third station 34. Alternatively, only two of the spindles at the two stations may be operative. Two two-spindle units (Fig. 8, not shown) may be used, with a work-table indexed in steps of 60 degrees and having six stations, including four work-stations. Four single-spindle units may be provided, and the workholders on the tables may be interchangeable. Rays of light, controlling the indexing mechanism, may be interrupted by the operator while he is mounting work on the table, thus preventing the next indexing step until the mounting operation has been completed, as described in Specification 869,182. The light-emitting and receiving elements (not shown) may be interchangeably mounted on the column 2, and it is stated that the rays may also control the work-holders.
