Apparatus for deforming, by upsetting or stretching, sheet-metal articles and profiled elements, comprises one or more pairs of coplanar jaws, carried by an upper carrier member, opposed by one or more pairs of jaws carried by a lower carrier member, the article or sheet being clamped between the upper and lower jaws, and operating members positioned between the jaws and their carrier members so that as the carrier members are urged towards one another the jaws of each pair are forced apart (or together) to stretch (or upset) the article, the operating members rolling on the surfaces of the jaws and carriers between which they are inserted. Between a pair of jaws 1, Fig. 1, and their carrier 2 are interposed strips 3, embedded in a rubber layer 9, having curved rolling edges 4, the centres of curvature of each of which are disposed one on each side of the longitudinal axis of the strip 3 so that, when the carrier 2 is urged towards a similar carrier having jaws opposed to the jaws 1, a sheet clamped between the jaws 1 and the said opposed jaws is upset as the jaws 1 are forced inwardly towards one another by said rolling movement. The strips 3 may carry lugs 7 engaging in recesses in interchangeable pressure plates 6 on the carrier and lower surface of the jaws, or the rolling surfaces may be slightly toothed as at 8. The bodies 3 may comprise rounded-off rollers, Fig. 2, or spheres or rollers 10, Fig. 3, between inclined surfaces on the carrier 2 and wedge jaws 1. In the embodiment of Fig. 3 the rollers may be held by a cage 11 resting on a rubber buffer 12 and a buffer 13 between the jaws 1 may aid their return movement. The rollers may engage depressions on the carrying body or, as in Fig. 5, depressions on plates 6 secured to the carrying body 2 and the jaws.
