Metal sheet or strip is levelled by a method in which engaging means, which may be rolls or bars, arranged substantially opposite to each other and extending transversely of the sheet or strip and co-operating in pairs are brought into contact with opposite surfaces of the metal sheet or strip so that it obtains a slight plastic deformation and the sheet or strip is simultaneously moved relative to the engaging means and a tension, produced by forces applied to opposite flat surfaces of the sheet or strip, is exerted on the sheet or strip beyond the engaging means in the direction of movement of the strip or sheet which is less than the tension necessary to stretch it beyond its yield point. In a preferred apparatus a strip 1 is moved past engaging means 2 in the form of rolls having back-up rolls 6 by means of driven rolls 7 which may be steel or coated with rubber or nylon or, as shown, carry endless belts 8 around tension rollers 9. When a resilient material is used a hard metal or ceramic material may be incorporated in the rubber or nylon to improve its wear characteristics. The sheet or strip may then be inspected on inspection table 5, cut by flying shears 12 and conveyed by means of conveyer 13 to stacking station 14.
