Abstract

1,125,009. Gripping tools. IMPERIAL METAL INDUSTRIES (KYNOCH) Ltd. 19 May, 1967 [3 June, 1966], No. 24861/66. Heading B4W. A gripping device for sheet or strip material comprises jaw members 7 and 8 pivotally movable about a pivot-pin 3 and having antifriction means, in the form of rollers 9 one located at the edge of each jaw member in a plane transverse to the axis of the pin 3. In operation, a piece of strip or sheet material to be rolled is gripped between the jaws 7 and 8 by pressure applied to the handles 4, and 5, and the material inserted between the nip of a pair of rolls 13. Force applied to the device towards the rolls 13 effects the opening of the jaws to release the strip material by contact between the rollers 9 and the rolls 13, the rollers 9 being positioned on opposite side of the pivot to the jaws. In an alternative embodiment the rollers 9 are positioned between the jaws and the pivot on extended portions 16 and 17 of the jaw arms. The extent of pivotal movement of the jaws is limited by co-operating abutting surface 10, 11 on the handles. The antifriction means may be in the form of a P.T.F.E. coating on the edge surfaces of the device instead of the rollers shown.
