766,143. Pallets for handling loads. TATKO, J. Nov. 2, 1954 [March 3, 1954; Oct. 5, 1954; Oct. 5, 1954], No. 31695/54. Class 78 (4). Slots in the upper deck of a pallet for handling slates and the like form pockets 118, Fig. 7, 118a, 119, 119a for receiving slates S, Fig. 9, which then form walls between which the remaining slates may be supported on the upper deck. The pockets are defined by adjacent stringers 116, 117, 116a, 117a, which, together with further stringers 134, 135, space the upper and lower decks to which they are nailed or bolted. The bottoms of the pockets are formed by the lower deck and the ends of the pockets may be closed by longer boards 121, 122 in the top deck or by plugs bolted between the stringers 116, 117, or 116a, 117a or by bolts extending between the stringers. The pockets on each side may be divided by a longer board 132 in the top deck as shown or may extend for the full width of the pallet. The L-shaped metal brackets 137 shown reinforcing the ends of the boards 121, 122, 132 may be replaced by U- shaped members embracing the lower deck as well as the upper, and in one construction, in which the stringers 134, 135 are replaced by a single central stringer, these members are omitted. The pallet may be constructed of material other than wood.
