766,128. Storing and transporting gases. MORRISON, W. L. April 22, 1954, No. 11685/54. Class 8(2) Transport of natural gas mostly methane from a well source 37 to a place of use, e.g. a burner 24 heating a steam generating boiler 25 is effected by compressing and liquefying in a condenser 11 cooled by a two stage refrigerating system A, B and feeding the liquefied gas through a valved duct 12 into a transportable insulated container 13 maintained at just above atmospheric pressure by a relief valve 18 which allows vapour from above the liquid in the container to pass to an engine 20 driving the transport vessel, e.g., a ship 14; any excess vapour being vented through said valve 18 to atmosphere. Accidental ignition of such wasted vapour is prevented by mixing it with sufficient inert gas, e.g. carbon dioxide from a reservoir 29 in a nozzle 27 open to atmosphere; the diluent gas feed duct 28 being controlled by a device 30 responsive to pressure in the vapour discharge duct 19. The reservoir 29 also supplies carbon-dioxide to the vapour space of the container 13 through a duct 33 when a valve 32 therein is opened by a device 31 responsive to a predetermined oxygen content of the vapour space. On reaching the destination the vapour passes through a land duct 21 to a refrigerating system 22 and to the burner 24. In a modification the vapour serves to cool a eutectic circulating in a cold chamber on board ship prior to being fed to the engine.
