Abstract
765,405. Electric incandescent lamps. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Feb. 23, 1955 [Feb. 26, 1954], No; 5435/55. Class 39(2) The bulb of an electric incandescent lamp is provided with an internal coating layer of powdery light-diffusing material consisting of an alkaline earth phosphate which is insoluble in water. Preferably the phosphate has apatite structure. The method of applying the light-diffusing layer comprises the steps of applying to the inside surface of the bulb, a stable suspension of an alkaline earth phosphate, which is insoluble in water, to which is added at least 1.5 per cent (calculated on the phosphate) of phosphoric acid, or a compound or compounds which produce this amount of phosphoric acid, in a volatile organic liquid which is miscible with water, said suspension preferably having a water content of about 3 per cent (also calculated on the phosphate), the resultant layer after drying, being heated to a temperature of at least 200‹C. In an example 3750 grams of 3 Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2 . CaF 2 or 3 Ca 3 - (PO 4 ) 2 . Ca(OH) 2 are ground with 135 c.c. of water, 155 c.c. of phosphoric acid (specific weight 1.75) and 3.75 litres of methanol for 96 hours in a porcelain ball-mill having a capacity of 15 litres with the use of 10 kgs. of flint stones of 2 cms. in diameter at 60 revolutions per minute. The phosphate particles after this treatment are smaller than 3 microns. The suspension obtained is finally diluted with 10.4 litres of ethanol and sprayed upon the inner surface of a lamp bulb and, after draining away the excess suspension, the remaining layer is dried by blowing in hot air. At the areas at which other parts are to be sealed to the bulb in manufacturing a lamp the layer is removed by a rotating brush, .and the remainder is then heated at 500‹C. for one minute.
