765,166. Shearing. SWANSON, B. A, Sept. 13, 1954, No. 26462/54. Class 83 (4). In a portable tool for shearing sheet metal in which a blade reciprocated transversely of the handle by a piston driven by compressed air co-operates with a fixed cutting edge on a cutting head, the cutting head is rotatably mounted on the handle to facilitate shearing in any required direction. A sleeve 29 closed at one end and rotatably mounted in an aperture in one end of the handle 10 carries on its open end the tubular shank 38 of the cutting head 36. A latch 42 on the handle 10 is engageable in slots in the shank 38 to lock the cutting head 36 in the desired position. The cutting head consists of a slotted helical plate having a projecting jaw 47a adapted to pass under the sheet S, Fig. 14, that is being cut. A blade 49 having an oblique cutting edge co-operating with the inner edge of the jaw 47a reciprocates in the tubular shank and is urged by a spring 54 into contact with a rod 60 connected to the double-acting piston 61 which slides in the sleeve 29. A valve 20 controls the supply of compressed air and the handle is packed with steel wool 27 to muffle the exhaust. Specification 765,165 is referred to.
