Abstract

765,022. Table lighters, MAYER, H. March 7, 1955 [Aug. 2, 1954], No..6674/55. Class 75(3) In a table lighter in which upper and lower sections are displaceable relative to one another when the lighter is lifted the upper section consists of two flat plates each rolled over along one edge to form guide sleeves and mounted between the plates is a fuel tank and an ignition lever carrying a snuffer cap, one at least of the plates being made U-shaped (by bending one of its side edges outwardly) to receive the actuating mechanism for the igniting and extinguishing operations, and a box shaped cover is detachably connected to the plates and is provided in its top surface with an opening for the snuffer cap. The lower section comprises a heavy base 1 to which are attached two guide pins 12, a support 19 and a base casing 29. The upper section comprises two plates 7, 8 vertically slidable on the pins 12 by sleeves 6 formed along one edge of the plates 6, 7 the other edge of which is flanged as at 13. The fuel tank 10 is carried between the plates 7, 8. The ignition lever 5 which carries the snuffer cap and is pivtotally mounted on the plates 7, 8 by a pin 9, is moved to the open position by tension springs 21, 21a attached to the ends 14a. 14b of a pin 14 mounted on the lever 5 and moving in arcuate slots 16 in the plates 7, 8. A cover 2 provided with an aperture 4 to receive the lever 5 is mounted over the mechanism and slidably engages the base casing 29. When the cover 2 and the connected side plates are lifted the lower section slides downwards and a hook 28 formed on the support 19 strikes a projection 27 on a slide 23. vertically displaceably mounted outside the plate 7 and engaging by a rectangular projection in a slot in the plate 7, to hold the slide 23 stationarv wherebv continued movement of the cover 2 and connected side plates causes a section 20 attached to the lever 5 to be released thus allowing the tensioned springs 21, 21a to pivot the lever 5 to the open position. When the cover 2 is depressed the end 14a of the pin 14 engages a cam surface 18 on the support 19 to pivot the lever 5 to the closed position and to tension the springs 21, 21a; further depression enables the projection 27 to disengage the hook 28 and the plate 23 to be pressed by a spring 26 into locking engagement with the sector 20. The cover 2 is provided with air supply slots 36, 37 and a leaf spring 38 fixed to the upper part engages one of the slots 36 to detachably connect the cover 2 with the upper section. In a modification, Figs. 9 and 11, ignition is effected by a filament 47 energized by a battery 42 carried between the plates 39, 40. The lever 5 is operated by a link 45 attached at one end to the end 14a of the pin 14 and at the other end to a lug 46 on the base 1. The Specification states that the lighter can be used with liquefied gaseous fuel.
