Abstract
764,952. Changing gauge of wheels of railway vehicles. VALE, V. H. April 1, 1955 [Nov. 2, 1954], No. 9622/55. Class 103(6). In a tower traversing crane or other rail vehicle the gauge of the wheels when traversing curves can be varied by the provision of rocker arms on the chassis at diagonally opposite positions thereon, the rocker arms being capable of lateral movement and carrying castormounted rail wheels. As shown, longitudinal members 11 of the chassis are connected by cross-members 14 which support a rotatable tower. The chassis has two diagonally opposite wheel castors 13 mounted on brackets 23 which are pivotally connected to the members 11. At the other corners of the chassis are two pivotally mounted wheel castors 12 which are driven through gearing by A.C. synchronous motors 19. Guide rollers 24 are provided to guide the wheels on the rails 25. At curves the speed of the motor which is on the inside track may be reduced by connecting a resistance in series with this motor. This may be done by hand or automatically by means of an electric switch or relay.
