Abstract
764,901. Windscreen washers. SOC. D'ETUDES ET D'APPLICATIONS INDUSTRIELLES. Jan. 11, 1955 [Jan. 13, 1954; July 30, 1954], No. 784/55. Class 138(1) [Also in Groups XXVIII and XXIX] A vehicle windscreen washer is characterized in that the pump for pumping liquid from a receptacle A, Fig. 1, to at least one nozzle B, comprises a body formed by an elastic cylindrical tube having intake and discharge valves at its ends, the tube being positioned between a base plate and a plate pivoted on the former the pivoted plate being operable to flatten the tube. As shown in Fig. 1, the receptacle A for cleaning liquid L, communicates with the pumping means E connected by a tube D to the nozzle B directed towards the windscreen C, the pumping means being operable manually by a knob G and flexible means F. If desired the pumping means E may be disposed outside the receptacle e.g. mounted on the lid thereof or interposed in the tube D between the receptacle and the nozzle. Refering to Figs. 2 and 3 the pumping means E comprises a flexible cylidrical tube 1 fitted at its ends with hollow sockets 2, 3 which are supported in lateral shoulders 10a of a, plate 10 engaging the tube 1. The sockets 2, 3 are connected at 2a, 3a with the liquid L in the receptacle A and the nozzle B, respectively, and house spherical caps 6 each perforated at 7 and fitted, as at 8, with a flexible circular mambrane 9, the caps and membranes constituting a suction valve 4 and a discharge valve 5. Pivoted in a part 10b of the plate 10, by a tongue 11a, is a plate 11 of generally trapezoidal shape and bearing on the tube 1, the plate 11 being connected at at 12a to a flexible cable 12 passing through a hole 10c in the plate 10 and through a sheath 13, the cable' 12 and sheath 13, constituting the flexible means F, Fig. 1. The plate 11 may be urged to the position shown in Fig. 3 by a spring. On operating the knob G, Fig. 1, the cable 12 causes the plate 11 to flatten the tube 1 and discharge liquid through the valve 5. When the knob G is released the valve 5 closes and liquid is drawn through a valve 4 to replenish the interior of the tube 1. The plate 10 may be secured to the lid of the receptacle. In a modification the pumping means E is supported within the receptacle by the lid and a tongue extending from the plate 11 passes through an arcuate slot in _the lid and is connected to the cable 12. The nozzle B Fig. 8 is resiliently mounted in a hole K in the vehicle bonnet K, by the interpositioning of a rubber grommet, the normal shape of which is depicted in Fig. 7. The outside diameter of the part 29 of the grommet is substantially the same as the diameter of the hole k. When the grommet is positioned within the hole k and the portion 21 of the nozzle is forced through the holes 30, 31 in the grommet, the latter is expanded beneath the bonnet around the hole k and the portion 32, Fig. 7, is forced into a peripheral groove 26 in the nozzle portion 21. By using considerable force the nozzle may be dismounted from the bonnet when desired.
