Abstract

An object comprising a body of plastic composition with a decorative or reflective coating of metal, is made by moulding a plasticized cellulose acetate-butyrate moulding composition into the desired shape, sealing the total surface of the moulded body with an adherent layer of a thermosetting synthetic resin, and vacuum coating an adherent metallic layer over the whole or a part of the surface of the thermosetting synthetic resin layer. The thermosetting synthetic resin is preferably a urea-formaldehyde resin, but resins from formaldehyde and urea-like bodies such as thiourea or melamine may be used. The metallic layer is preferably of aluminium; it may be given a transparent coating of an epoxide-urea formaldehyde resin, and of a transparent silicone resin. The invention may be applied to the production of reflectors, e.g. for use with photoflash lamps, for automobile or domestic appointments such as grills, door handles and light fixtures. The metallic layer may be applied in the form of a pattern by masking parts of the thermosetting resin layer, which may be coloured. The thermosetting synthetic resin and epoxide-urea formaldehyde resin are applied as solutions and are baked after drying. The silicone resin is applied as a solution and air-dried.
