[Also in Group X] A trough-shaped structure such as the bottom of a dry dock, dock sluice, dock slide or gate chamber has its base 1 tensioned towards the earth beneath by tie rods 3 which are arched in the subsoil at 9 and are stressed. As applied to a dry dock the rods 3 are symmetrically positioned on either side of the central line where the keel of a ship is to rest.
