Abstract

Shaped masses of polyamide are continuously formed by polymerizing e -caprolactam at 250-275 DEG C. and elevated pressure in presence of not more than 1 per cent water in a closed, filled vessel 4, to which is directly connected, e.g. by pipe 6, a pump 8 which presses the molten polyamide, with the entire water content, through a shaping nozzle or nozzles 9. The water is mixed with the lactam in mixing vessel 1 and delivered therefrom to vessel 4, by pump 3. Heating jackets 2, 5 and 6 enclose the whole apparatus. Pressure in the reaction vessel 4 is regulated by a pipe and valve (not shown) which returns excess caprolactam delivered by pump 3 to the vessel 1. The temperature in vessel 1 is below 110 DEG C. to prevent evaporation of the added water. Tube 4 is of such a length that the lactam-water mixture is retained there for about 8 hours. The pressure at the beginning of the tube is 15-35 atms. and at the end is about 5 atms. The extrusion device 9 may be a spinning nozzle for fine threads or monofils or may be a slot nozzle for bands or ribbons. Yarns may be stretched directly on a winding-machine after treatment with an emulsifying oil. Examples describe the production of stretched yarns. The water may be added as a substance which splits off water forming a polyamide, e.g. an amino acid or a diamine-dicarboxylic acid salt.
