Abstract
A low alloy steel particularly for casting and consisting of: C 0.1 - 1 per cent; Mn 0.2 - 5 per cent; Si 0.1 - 0.75 per cent; P O-0.5 per cent; S 0 - 0.7 per cent, one or more of Mo, Cr, W 0 - 5 per cent in total; Ni 0 - 4 per cent; Fe the remainder, also contains the residue from the treatment of the steel in molten condition with 0.025 - 0.5 per cent of rare earth metals. The rare earth metals are one or more of the following: Ce, La, Nd, Pr, Sm, Il, Eu, Gd, Dy, Yb and a suitable mixture consists of: La 30 per cent; Ce 45 per cent; Pr 11 per cent; Nd 7 per cent; other rare earth metals 6 per cent; impurities the remainder. If the steel is produced by a basic process, it is deoxidized, e.g. with silicomanganese, in the furnace and then tapped into a ladle where calcium-silicon, rare earth metals, aluminium and calcium-silicon are added in that order during tapping. If produced by an acid process, the steel and slag are poured into a first ladle where the slag is changed to a basic one and then to a further ladle where the additions are made. The steel is stated to be particularly suitable for castings subject to impact such as railway truck frames, bolsters, friction shoes and armour plate.
