Abstract

762,961. Electrolytically removing tarnish from silver, silver alloys and silver plate. GOLD, SILVER & JEWELLERY INDUSTRIES, DESIGN & RESEARCH CENTRE FOR THE, and GODDARD & SONS, Ltd., J. Oct. 12, 1954 [Oct. 22, 1953], No. 29220/53. Class 41. Tarnished silver, silver alloys, and silverplated articles are cleaned by treating with an aqueous solution containing an acid stronger than hydrosulphuric acid which is not such as will attack silver to any appreciable extent and a soluble silver-complexing compound to reduce the silver ion concentration while maintaining the silver and any other metal in the tarnished article more electronegative than another conducting member in the solution. Worn silver plate exposing the under metal or articles comprising silver and another metal may be so treated without discoloration of the non-silvered areas. The complexing compound is preferably thiourea or thiosemicarbazide and the solution may also include a non-ionic wetting agent. Either (a) the tarnished article is maintained in contact with a more electropositive metal in the treating solution which is dissolved by the acid therein, or (b) it is made the cathode in an electrolytic cell containing the treating solution as electrolyte. Typically, for method (a) the electropositive metal is aluminium, although it can be nickel, and may form a basket in which the tarnished articles are placed for immersion in a solution in which the acid component is hydrochloric acid, alone or admixed with sulphuric acid or aminosulphonic acid or sulphuric acid mixed with chloracetic acid although sulphuric, citric and malic acids may be used with some metals; while for method (b) the anode is of carbon or aluminium and the acid is hydrochloric acid. Specification 722,255, [Group II], is referred to.
