Abstract
1,196,395. Electro-chemically cleaning. OLIN MATHIESON CHEMICAL CORP. Feb. 4, 1969 [April 17, 1968], No. 5938/69. Heading C7B. Copper or copper alloy (e.g. Cu-Sn, Cu-Al or brass) strip is cleaned by first soaking it, e.g. for 2-60 seconds, and then anodically treating it in an electrolyte solution of polyphosphate, such as pyrophosphate e.g. of sodium, tripolyphosphate or tetrapolyphosphate, and hydroxycarboxylic acid, such as citric, tartaric, glycollic, gluconic and/or a sugar acid; preferably a mixture of citric and sodium citrate is used. The electrolyte may be regenerated in a cell comprising cathode starter sheets and stainless steel anodes using 1-20 ASF current density to plate out the dissolved Cu and other metals. For anodic treatment, the strip may be passed over a roller over which a curved stainless steel cathode is placed, the electrolyte being pumped from a nozzle in the cathode-anode space.
