762,735. Stethoscopes. PIOCHET, J. Nov. 11, 1954 [Nov. 16, 1953], No. 32658/54. Class 81(2) [Also in Group XXXIX] A stethoscope for detecting the flow of liquids comprises a tubular probe 1, a diaphragm 4 and either electric or acoustic means, or both, for enabling the diaphragm vibrations to be heard. The diaphragm is engaged by a circular flange 3 on the probe and one or more circular rims 6, 7 on a bearing mass 5. The bearing mass is urged against the diaphragm by a screw plunger 12. The diaphragm tension can be increased further by a second plunger 16 mounted within the first, the second plunger engaging the diaphragm centrally. The bearing mass 24, Fig. 2, is a permanent magnet and a coil 25 on the diaphragm transmits electrical vibrations to an amplifier 26 which feeds earphones 28. Holes 18 in the bearing mass and fittings 19, 20 enable conventional stethoscope tubes to be used. The casing is attached to the probe by means of a rubber sleeve 8, 10. The outside edge of the diaphragm is held by a felt lining 22. The diaphragm may be corrugated and may have zones of different thicknesses.
