Abstract

762,734. Therapeutic heating apparatus. RAYTHEON MANUFACTURING CO. Nov. 10, 1954 [Nov. 18, 1953], No. 32606/54. Class 81(2) [Also in Group XL(c)] Therapeutic heating apparatus for introducing into a body electromagnetic wave energy of known frequency includes a source of electromagnetic wave energy and an impedance matching pad to control the amount of energy which enters the body, the pad being so arranged between the body and the source that wave energy can be passed through the pad and a medium such as air between the source and the body, the dielectric constant of part of or all the pad being approximately equal to the geometric mean of the dielectric constants of the medium and the body. Microwaves emitted from an antenna A irradiate a body B through the impedance matching pad P. For maximum absorption of energy by the body the dielectric constant of the pad is approximately the geometric mean of the dielectric constants of the body and the medium through which the microwaves are transmitted, the thickness of the pad is approximately equal to an odd number of quarter wavelengths of the microwaves passing through the pad and the pad is located a distance from the body which is a multiple of one half the wavelength. The dielectric constant and/or thickness of the pad may be varied to cause uneven heating or to correct uneven emission of microwaves e.g. shielding of an eye while the surrounding area is being heated may be effected by having a portion of the pad over the eye departing from the optimum conditions. The material forming the pad is made by milling butyl rubber and successively adding titanium dioxide (between 50 per cent and 80 per cent by weight), zinc oxide, stearic acid, mercaptobenzothiazole (sold under the Registered Trade Mark "CAPTAX"), tetramethylthiuramdisulphide (sold under the Registered Trade Mark "TUADS") and sulphur. After cooling, the mixture is stripped from the rolls, allowed to stand for twenty-four hours, and cut into discs of the required size which are then stacked, pressed and cured.
