Abstract
762,685. Automatic gain control. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Dec. 14, 1954 [Jan. 29, 1954], No. 2756/54. Class 40(5) In a television A.G.C. circuit the cathode of a diode 7 is directly connected to the anode of a video amplifier 6 at which the composite signal is such that synch. pulses are positive-going. Positive-going pulses derived from the line timebase transformer are applied to the grid of limiter 3 via a time-delay circuit 2, 4. Positive-going impulses of constant amplitude appear in the anode circuit of the limiter 3, the circuit 2, 4 being such that these impulses occur during the " back-porch period of the signal. Pulses of controllable height, adjustable by means of potentiometer 5 which comprises a contrast control, are applied to the anode of the diode 7 and cause conduction during the " back-porch " period. The tips of the pulses are thereby clamped at the black level and the base of the pulses provides a negative potential which after smoothing by network 9, 10, 11 comprises the A.G.C. potential. As an alternative, positive going impulses occurring during the blanking periods of the frame synchronizing signals may be used.
