Abstract

762,550. Cathode-ray tubes. MORLE, C. W. [Philco Corporation]. Oct. 19, 1954, No. 30049/54. Class 39(1). A cathode ray tube, preferably a colour television receiver, has a gun for producing two or more electron beams individually controllable in intensity comprising conductive flanged cylinder 20, Fig. 2, housing cathode 30 and having peripheral apertures through which intensity control electrodes 34, 36 pass, electrodes 34, 36 being coplanar and having insulating spacing washers 44, 46 on either side thereof, and the emissive cathode surface is positioned closely adjacent to the intensity control electrodes 34, 36. A flanged cylinder 20 of nickel or stainless steel has slots 26, 28 through which spade shaped control electrodes 34, 36 pass. The control electrodes have apertures 38, 40 of equal or unequal sizes according as to whether the beams passing through them are of equal or unequal cross section, and are held in position by insulating washers 44, 46 preferably of mica or ceramic and a flanged metal ring 48 welded to cylinder 20. It is stated that electrons cannot pass through the gap between the two control electrodes. The indirectly heated cathode 30 is carried by steatite or lavite disc 50 and is spaced from the control electrodes by annular steatite or lavite spacer 56 ; disc 50 is locked in position by flanged ring 58 welded to 20. All the spacers are accurately dimensioned. The assembly is supported by ears 68 fused to glass rods and by the electrode leads ; the glass rods also carry the gun anode. A ribbed disc, Fig. 1 (not shown) centres the assembly within the tube neck. To make both beams coincide where they strike the screen, the shape of the control electrodes is modified by giving the adjacent ends of the control electrodes semi-spherical shapes or by inclining their ends, Figs. 4, 5 (not shown). The invention is preferably applied to the dual beam colour television receiver disclosed in Specification 745,353 employing indexing means in which the intensity of the auxiliary beam is independently varied by a pilot carrier signal having a frequency outside the frequency bands of the colour video signals to generate an indexing signal. It may also be applied to colour television receivers in which each beam carries a video signal of one colour.
