Abstract

762,445. Screw propellers ; steering ships. COSTA, L., and MAIER, E. R. F. Nov.17, 1954 [May 5, 1954], No. 33340/54. Class 114. In a device for improving the propelling and manoeuvrability of screw-propelled vessels including a bulb or like shaped member 12 arranged in the extension of the propeller axis behind the propeller Sch<SP>1</SP>, the member 12 has a smaller diameter than the propeller and is carried by a support positioned behind the propeller in such a manner that the greatest diameter of the member lies approximately in the plane 28 of the leading edge of the support whereas the front end of the freely protruding head BK<SP>1</SP> of the member overlaps the hub N<SP>1</SP> and extends closely up to the trailing edge of the propeller blades. In the embodiment of Figs. 1 and 1a the member 12 is attached by projections 24, 26 to the rudder post Rst<SP>1</SP>, the rear end Bs<SP>1</SP> of the member being attached to, and participating in the movement of, the rudder R<SP>1</SP>. The head BK<SP>1</SP> of the member has a recess M<SP>1</SP> for the cap K<SP>1</SP> of the hub N<SP>1</SP>. In other embodiments the member 12 is supported entirely on the rudder post, or entirely on the rudder, or on an arm forward of the rudder.
