Abstract
The invention comprises phosphorus-ring compounds containing halogen, of the formula <FORM:0762147/IV(b)/1> in which the R's may be hydrogen or alkyl and X is chloro-, bromo- or iodo-alkyl, and a method of preparing them from the corresponding 2-halo-phosphorus compound as above with an oxirane of formula <FORM:0762147/IV(b)/2> in which R5 is H or alkyl or chloro- or bromo-alkyl, in presence of titanium or zirconium halide catalysts. The starting-materials may be made by the process described in Specification 762,125. In examples, the 2-chloro-5-ethyl-4-propyl-derivative of the above formula is reacted with ethylene oxide in presence of titanium tetrachloride, or zirconium tetrachloride, propylene oxide in presence of either catalyst, and epichlorohydrin, with titanium tetrachloride, to give the corresponding products in which X of the above formula is 2-chloroethoxy, 2-chloropropoxy-, and 2 : 3-dichloropropoxy -; the 2 - chloro - 4 - methyl-compound is reacted with ethylene oxide to give the corresponding 2-chloroethoxy product; the 2 - chloro - 4 : 4 : 6 - trimethyl compound is reacted with propylene oxide to give the 2-chloropropoxy product; the 2-bromo-5-butyl-5-ethyl-product gives a bromopropoxy derivative, with titanium tetrachloride as catalyst. Other halogen-containing oxiranes specified include the bromo- and iodo-compounds.
