Abstract

An adhesive for making pressure-sensitive tapes consists of a mixture of 5 to 10 parts (by volume) of a heat-stable silicone oil, 0.1 to 5 parts of an unvulcanized silicone rubber which is soluble in the oil, 0.1 to 15 parts of one or more reinforcing pigments selected from silica, titania, alumina, zinc oxide, diatomaceous earth, calcium carbonate and carbon black, and 0.1 to 0.5 part of benzoyl peroxide or tertiary butyl perbenzoate. In the example, the composition consists (in parts by volume) of 4 parts of dimethyl silicone gum, 6 parts of a dimethyl silicone oil, 1.5 parts of titania, 0.2 part of silica aerogel and 0.2 part of benzoyl peroxide. The adhesive composition is rendered pressure-sensitive, after application to the backing material, by heating at 250 DEG to 400 DEG F. for 10 to 60 minutes.
