[Also in Groups XV and XXII] In a machine for applying metal bands 23 to packages and securing them, in position by sealing clips 36, wherein the band is tensioned by oscillatory movement of a pair of handles 30 in a direction parallel to the length of the band, and the clip compressed, to grip the overlapping band ends, by moving the handles one relatively to the other in a plane perpendicular to that in which they move to effect tensioning, a cutting blade 34 is slidably mounted on a support carrying the clip compressing means and the handles, and is moved, when the handles are operated to effect a clip compressing operation, to engage and indent the band to facilitate subsequent breaking. Jaws 17 with hooked portions 27 are pivoted to a pivot member 12 by bolts 18 which also secure plates 19, 21, 22, 24 notched as at 25 to receive the clip. Handles 30 are pivoted together by pin 31 which extends through a slot 32 in plate 19 into a hole in the blade 34, the latter sliding in a groove 33 in plate 21. When the handles are oscillated parallel to the length of the band from the position shown in Fig. 2 they act through a pawl and ratchet to rotate the milled wheel 35, mounted on an eccentric part of pivot 36, and the wheel tensions the band. When the handles are moved outwardly from each other jaws 17 rock about 18 to close, and pin 31 moves downwardly in slot 32 to operate blade 34.
