Abstract

761,512. Fluid-pressure brakes. WESTING- HOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO., Ltd., and MORGAN, E. F. R. Sept. 19, 1955 [Sept. 20, 1954], No. 27201/54. Class 103 (1). In a fluid pressure braking apparatus for road vehicles, each wheel to be braked is provided with a compressed air brake cylinder supplied from a reservoir through a control valve located on the sprung portion of the vehicle adjacent the brake cylinder under the control of hydraulic pressure derived from a manually operated master cylinder. In the embodiment illustrated, compressed air brake cylinders 16, 161 and 5, 51 are provided for the front and rear wheels of a vehicle respectively. Control valves 17 and 7, mounted on the vehicle chassis and connected to their respective pairs of brake cylinders by flexible pneumatic hose couplings 15, 151 and 6, 61 control the supply of compressed air from compressed air reservoir 11 to their associated brake cylinders and exhaust therefrom in accordance with the hydraulic pressure applied thereto in response to the operation of the master cylinder 3. To effect application of the brakes, the driver's pedal 1 is depressed to supply hydraulic pressure from the master cylinder 3 to apply hydraulic pressure to the piston of each control valve 17, 7 and cause the latter to operate its supply and exhaust valve assembly to close communication between the brake cylinders and the atmosphere and then open communication between these cylinders and the atmosphere and then open communication between these cylinders and the air reservoir 11. If desired, two smaller reservoirs 14, 23 may be provided to supply compressed air to the front and rear brake cylinders respectively in place of the single reservoir 11 to enable shorter lengths of piping to be used to increase the speed of application of the brakes. A further alternative construction is described and illustrated in the Specification wherein each brake cylinder is provided with its individual reservoir each forming a unitary structure.
