761,380. Bladed turbine and compressor rotors. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DE. VELOPMENT), Ltd. Oct. 22, 1954 [Nov. 26, 1953], No. 32901/53. Class 110 (3). A bladed rotor for a turbine or compressor comprises a plurality of coaxial, axially-spaced thin discs 1a, 1b ... and a plurality of rotor blades mounted on the periphery thereof, each blade 6 having an enlarged foot portion 6c and being secured to the rotor by a pair of retaining-pieces 20, one engaging with each circumferentially-facing side of the blade foot and being secured to all the thin discs. The blades are made of notch-sensitive material such as refractory ceramic. The sheet metal rotor discs la, 1b ... are clamped between end rings 2, 3 by means of bolts 4 and the discs are spaced apart by means of washers 5. The enlarged foot portion 6c of each blade is of dovetail shape, has a platform 6b and rests on the periphery of the discs 1a, 1b .... Each retaining piece 20 has side surfaces 20a corresponding to the side surfaces 6d of the dovetail foot portions 6c and has a fir-tree type root 20b by which it is retained in corresponding slots in the rotor discs. The discs are provided with apertures 22a, 22b ... through which cooling air is supplied, for example from the compressor in the case of a gas turbine engine, the air passing through the bores 20c in the retaining pieces 20 to the spaces 26, finally escaping through the gaps between the blade platforms. The refractory ceramic material of the blades may consist of, for example, sintered oxides, silicides, carbides or borides of metals such as beryllium, aluminium or titanium, or sintered metalceramic mixtures.
