Abstract

761,260. Wrapping-machines. G. D. SOC. ANON. Jan. 7, 1954 [Jan. 19, 1953; Aug. 4, 1953], No. 455/54. Class 94(1). In a method of wrapping chocolate coins and similar articles by a strip of foil applied on its top and bottom surfaces, the upper strip of the wrapping at the overlapping edges is pressed against the peripheral edge of the article with a turn-up of lesser height than the thickness of the article and the peripheral edge of the article is completely covered by the turn-up of the lower strip of foil which overlaps the turn-up of the upper strip. The articles 1, Fig. 5, are fed from a stack 4 into a folding-box 7, 8, taking with them a U-shaped fold of the wrapper foil 2 cut off by a knife 11, by means of a feed plate 3, Fig. 7, having a fixed jaw 35 and a movable jaw 36 having extremities 42, 43 moving ahead of the article 1 to force the wrapper into the box 7, 8 against the edge of counter-feed plate 6 which moves simultaneously in the same direction as the plate 3. The article and the folded wrapper are moved through the fold box to lie between a die 13 and anvil 15, Fig. 9, by which they are held while the plates 3, 6 are withdrawn and re-set to engage the next article. A cutting die 14, Fig. 11, then descends and trims off the periphery 33 of the folded foil as in Fig. 2. The die 13 is then withdrawn and a centering die 49, Fig. 12, is lowered which surrounds the disc and presses down the folds 34 onto the upper face of the counter-die 19. A die 50, Fig. 13, is then lowered, compresses the spring 47 and presses directly on the die 13 which forces the disc 1 against the anvil 15 and both the disc and the anvil descend into the counter-die 19 to complete the folding of the wrapper. The disc and its foil-wrapper may be embossed at the end of this stage. Dies 50, 13 are then withdrawn leaving the wrapped disc 1 on the face of the anvil 15 from which it is ejected by the oncoming disc. In a modification the disc is fed initially into the U-folded foil so that the crease of the fold is tangential to one side of the disc, the remaining sequences in the wrapping operation being unaltered.
