Abstract

868,692. Making dished receptacles. BRITISH XYLONITE CO. Ltd. May 25, 1959 [June 4, 1958], No. 17854/58. Class 18. [Also in Group XXII] Pans are made from sheet material blanks 11a by clamping the bottom-forming section of the blank between shaping members 55, 57 which reciprocate together to cause folding tools 65, 66, 64 to fold up the sides, fold the corner flaps 67 down on to the adjacent side walls, and turn over the margin of the pan to form a smooth rim. A web of aluminium foil is fed intermittently from a roll to a punch which cuts opposite notches in the edges, and on to a platen 58 with hinged side wings 65, 66. A die 55 of the shape of the pan then descends and the web is clamped between the die and the platen, Fig. 7 ; simultaneously a guillotine severs the blank 11a from the web and the punch cuts the corner notches in the web for the next blank. Further descent of the die pushes down the platen against springs 63, fixed abutments 68, Fig. 11, turn up the side wings 65 and spring-pressed plungers 71 then turn up the end wings 67 thus leaving projecting double thickness flaps 11b, Fig. 8. As the assembly continues to descend, an abutment 82 is moved out of the path of the plungers 71 allowing the end wings 66 to drop, whereupon abutments 92 operate bell-crank levers to swing corner folding wings 67 pivoted at the ends of the side wings 65 into the position shown in Fig. 9 to fold the flaps 11b onto the ends of the tray. The die and platen then commence their upward movement and the bell-cranks leave the stops 92 so that tension springs can swing back the corner wings 67, and the side wings 65 drop, Fig. 10. Hinged to the upper edges of the die 55 are four rim-folding bars 64 operated by toggle levers 94, 95 through an operating finger 98 co-operating with a catch pivoted on the machine frame. During the downward movement of the die the catch is pushed aside withoutoperating the bars 64, but during the upward movement it swings the finger 98 to turn down the rim-folding bars 64 as shown in Fig. 10 to form a double rim and lock the flaps 11b in place. The platen 58 stops when it has reached its normal level, Fig. 11 and the die continues to rise carrying the completed pan with it ; air under pressure is then applied successively to downwardly and sidewardly directed sets of passages in the die to release the pan and then to blow it sidewardly out of the machine. The machine is adjustable for making different sizes of pan.
